It is not so surprising that Leigh Fermor spent decades crafting these books - there really isn't a word out of place. I have just been re-reading A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water. With a remarkable personal charm and magnetism, Leigh Fermor seems to have been a sort of cross between Casanova and James Bond. He had an incredibly adventurous life which included the capture of a leading German commander in Crete during World War II. Leigh Fermor died at an advanced age in 2011, but the final book, The Broken Road, is being edited posthumously and will appear later this year.Ī great deal has been written and said about Leigh Fermor. Decades later he wrote about his travels in A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water. Alternately sleeping in barns and in stately homes, he travelled from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople (he always calls it Constantinople, although it was Istanbul by then.) He wandered in a leisurely manner through what now seem to be the dreamscapes of Mitteleuropa before World War II. In December 1933, a young man named Patrick Leigh Fermor left England to travel on foot across Europe. Detail from The Battle of Alexander at Issus, Albrecht Altdorfer, 1529.

Like many explorations, Sweet misses as much as he finds. His book combines meticulous research with primary interviews to highlight the areas of British national cinema which are worthy of popular and critical re-examination. Matthew Sweet’s Shepperton Babylon adds to this current trend. Low’s prejudices and preferences are now being challenged by revisionist film historians. The academic discipline has been long overshadowed by Rachael Low’s seminal, multi-volume The History of the British Film. Yet much of British cinema remains “lost” to the popular imagination, non-existent beyond Ken Loach and Mike Leigh, John Grierson, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Modules on the native film industry are a staple component of most film studies courses in UK universities. The BBC’s recent series The Lost World of Mitchell and Kenyon was an admirable success. The rediscovery of British cinema is underway. (Published in August of 2020 but is a predicted bestseller for 2021.) Open Water – Caleb Azumah Nelson A sentence in a review that struck me and compelled me to buy the book was that Edie, the protagonist of the book is “caught mercilessly at the intersection of capitalism, racism and sexism.” This is Raven Leilani’s debut novel, and it has been highly praised for its “lustrous” language and its acute observations of metropolitan life for a twenty-three-year-old woman. This book is an exploration of societal tensions race, gender, and class from the perspective of a young black girl in her early twenties who gets involved with a middle-aged white man in an open marriage. I listened to an interview between Elizabeth Day and Raven Leilani and it had me scrambling to add this book to my list of books for 2021. Despite being uncertain in almost every other aspect of life, it is certain that 2021 will be an exciting year for the literary world. Following a year of reading in 2020 I kept a list of books that I’m eagerly anticipating for this year and as we face our third lockdown there is nothing like being able to look forward to a new book from a favourite author or a debut that offers a new and compelling voice. The long lockdown days of 2020 allowed me more time to read alongside an increasing need for escapism from the outside world that has seemingly become a dystopian novel in itself. Rhian Hutchings anticipates the top ten books to be published in 2021.
